WITCHBOARD (1985)

Directed by Kevin Tenney

Starring Tawny Kitaen and Todd Allen

Another horror gem from the mid-1980s, this flick was largely overlooked by everyone when it was released but a few critics noticed it. 1985 was such a good year for horror that another quality fear film wasn't going to make much of an impact. "Witchboard" slowly generated a following on video over the years, however, and spawned two sequels. Tenney's suspenseful screenplay rocks. The direction is OK and the low-budget film does have an adequate cast, including Stephen Nichols of "Days of Our Lives" fame.

Basically, the story follows Kitaen's relationship with a Ouija board, which promptly begins killing people via freak accidents, not unlike what we saw in the Omen series. It sounds standard, but the story is really full of surprises. The atmosphere is weak, but it's more than made up for by a great script. No nudity, no gore, just decent supernatural suspense. Check it out, but avoid the sequels at all cost.
