WISHMASTER (1997)

Directed by Robert Kurzman

Starring Tammy Lauren and Andrew Divoff

This was a "Wes Craven Presents" movie—meaning he didn't have anything to do about it except maybe on the financing side. Still, it's a better-than-average horror effort about a demon that grants any wish, but grants it in a way you wouldn't expect. He hides himself in other identities—such as the protagonist's boyfriend.

In a nutshell, this is yet another horror movie inspired by "The Monkey's Paw," but a pretty good one. Look for Tony Todd, the "Candyman" himself, in a bit role as a bouncer at a party. Robert Englund stars as a snobby party thrower. You may also notice Reggie Bannister of "Phantasm" fame in a bit part as well.

An ancient jewel unleashes an evil genie onto the world. Divoff is great as the Djinn, a wicked genie who grants people wishes in ways they didn't expect: He makes a woman "beautiful forever" by turning her into a store manican. When a hobo wishes cancer upon a drugstore owner who threw him out, the Djinn literally makes it happen. There's gore, great make-up effects, no sex, some suspense, decent scares. All in all, this is a solid horror movie, custom-made for fans. (Look for Tom Savini in a cameo as well.)

It was followed by an overly religious although mildly entertaining sequel, and eventually spawned a full-fledged direct-to-video franchise.
