WHISPERS (1989)

Directed by Douglas Jackson

Starring Victoria Tennant and Chris Sarandon

Pretty good sicko mystery—with everything from Satanism to necrophilia—based on a book by Dean Koontz. Tennant plays a woman who is being stalked by a wealthy farmer, played by Jean LeClerc. Only problem is LeClerc's character is already dead.  Sarandon plays the cop who helps her.

It's a small world. LeClerc starred in a sequel to Steve Martin's "The Jerk," while Tennant is married to Martin.

"Whispers" is no masterpiece, but it's worth renting. There's some genuine suspense in the story as Sarandon and Tennant search for answers to what really happened to LeClerc. It turns out his entire family is populated with Satanists. One particularly eerie scene, a satanic book collector explains his philosophy to investigators: He can't wait for the day when human sacrifices will be taking place on every street corner in America.

It's little creepy nuggets like that that make "Whispers" a worthwhile watch. Tragically, the film has the overall look and feel of a TV movie and doesn't deliver much in terms of atmosphere.
