TREMORS (1989)

Directed by Ron Underwood

Starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward

Pretty damn good commercial horror film in the vein of "The Blob" remake. Taking inspiration from '50s monsters films (notably "The Monolith Monsters") along with "Jaws," "Tremors" delivers a lot of entertainment value and was a guiding light in a dark and dull season for horror: the late 1980s.

Worm monsters are terrorizing the residents of a desert community. The local hicks -- including Bacon and Ward -- band together to stop them. The film feels a lot like a good disaster movie from the '70s, with characters banding together in order to survive a semi-natural threat. Unfortunately, the ending is a little bit too happy.

The slick and formulaic movie did nicely at the box office and spawned a direct-to-video franchise.
