THE TOXIC AVENGER (1985)

Directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman

Starring Andree Maranda and Mitchell Cohen

An unrated director's cult of this cult classic is available featuring more gore. But why this film even earned cult status is a mystery to me.Yes, it has gore. Yes, it has sex. Yes, it has comedy.

But the film is too intentionally funny, too deliberately over the top. It isn't scary or imaginative for a minute. It's basically "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" with explicit sex and violence.

Melvin (Cohen), a 98 pound weakling, is chased by a group of jocks and falls into a vat of toxic waste. He is transformed into a kind of monster super hero who, in addition to fighting crime, gets revenge on his tormentors.

It's one of those terrible, deliberately bad movies that tries so hard to be funny that it's depressing.

It has its followers of lame-ass, low-I.Q., undiscriminating schlock fans who believe a movie, even if it's trying to be stupid, can still be so bad it's funny.

I've always disagreed. For a film to be so bad it's funny, it has to think it's wonderful. Ed Wood never believed he was making a campy movie. Neither did H.G. Lewis.Pass on this piece, people. Avoid the lame sequels as well.
