TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD (1971)

Directed by Amando de Ossorio

Starring Lone Fleming and Cesar Burner

Upset that her former lesbian lover is hitting on her boyfriend during a train trip, a woman jumps off and heads to an abandoned monastery, where she is killed by the spirits of 13th-century legion of evil knights known as the Templars.

The spirits are blind, so they locate victims via sound. The scenes where they descend on their victims are moody and effective—particularly during a zombie attack in a manikin factory—but mainstream audiences today probably will find this movie too dated. Weird sex, some gore and some magnificent set pieces make it a must for all genre-philes.

The first in a series of Spanish "Blind Dead" movies, "Tombs of the Blind Dead" is now available for the first time uncut in the United States, thanks to Anchor Bay, which has released a letterboxed edition with subtitles.

Followed by "Return of the Blind Dead."
