SPECIES II (1998)

Directed by Peter Medak

Starring Natasha Henstridge and Michael Madsen

How bad can a movie be?

If anyone ever wanted to know why MGM is such a financially strapped film studio, it only takes one look at this, one of the worst horror films of all time, to know why.

Everything about this movie sucks. Experienced actors like George Dzundza as a colonel look lost as they deliver inane lines and stumble through a suspense-free plot. Henstridge returns, this time as a "good" alien and keeps her clothes on until the last reel of the film.

The nemesis of the film is an astronaut who, after a trip to Mars, transforms into a savage alien rapist. Henstridge, who has been developed by scientists using DNA left over from the alien in the first film, is for some reason amicable to living her life inside a glass cage and helping humans in any way she can.

Director Medak seems embarassed at having to direct a movie with sex scenes. Even the effects are lame for a modern movie.

The original "Species" was a halfway decent movie, even though it wasn't as fun as "Lifeforce," the film that inspired it. But "Species 2" is so bad it's almost worth seeing just for the sake of witnessing it.

How could a modern studio deliver such a load of total crap? It's something MGM seriously needs to ask itself. This doesn't even come close to delivering the goods.
