SHIVERS (1975)
Directed by David Cronenberg Starring Paul Hampton and Joe Silver Cronenberg's first full-length movie is a must-see classic. At a remote, sterile apartment complex, a disease has just been unleashed that turns ordinary, upstanding, sterile civilians into lust-obsessed zombies. It's as if people's libidos have been suddenly unleashed in sick and uncontrolled ways. As the disease spreads via mutant, penis-shaped, parasitic monsters that hibernate inside humans, so does the deviant behavior. In a scene that seems like a cross between "Night of the Living Dead" and Sodom and Gomorrah, the movie's already weird-looking hero (Hampton) is surrounded and engulfed by an army of zoned out sex addicts. An aging Barbara Steele also stars. The flick is full of sex and violence and is so good it even enjoyed a brief midnight run in 1998.Check out the "special edition" of the film released by Anchor Bay. Also known as, "They Came From Within." |
