RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975)

Directed by Jack Starrett

Starring Peter Fonda and Warren Oates

Pretty good mid-1970s race/horror film. Fonda and Oates are on a road trip in a camper with both their wives, when they have the misfortune of witnessing a satanic human sacrifice in the woods. They are chased by the inhuman satanists and get away, reporting the crime to the local sherriff.

The local authorities don't believe their story, and as they leave town they continue to be tracked by the satanists, leading to a "race with the devil."

A fun period piece, with Loretta Swit ("Hot Lips" from "MASH") as Oates' wife, "Race with the Devil" is still legimately scary. You're never sure who is or isn't a member of the satanic cult.

The action component of the film is pretty dated obviously. Some of the nudity looks like it was trimmed to get the film a PG rating at the time. But horror fans owe it to themselves to at least check out the restored DVD that Anchor Bay put out of this minor classic.

Director Starrett didn't make too much else worth talking about, although he did some "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Planet of the Apes" Tv series episodes.
