PYTHON (2000)
Starring Robert Englund and Casper Van Diem A pretty weak, direct-to-video knock-off, much in the spirit of "Spiders" but not nearly as fun. A giant python being bred by the U.S. government for military purposes is set free in a small town after a plane crash. After bodies start piling up, a local teen is falsely accused of being the killer. Englund is a scientist consulting the government on what to do about its prize specimen loose among the public. Van Diem (of "Starship Troopers" fame) is a military guy that wants to kill the creature. Englud spends much of the movie behind a desk, as does Van Diem. Most of the story takes place among young people in the town, and partially revolves around an annoying subplot involving a love triangle. But Jennifer McCarthy actually proves herself to be an amusing actress, playing a big-haired floozy flirting with a real estate agent who's trying to sell her a home. The monster effects are CGI and certainly look it. "Python" isn't a bad movie - just not as good one might expect, given that it has Englund in it. He's always fun to watch. Too bad he's not in this movie much. All in all, it's a pretty forgettable direct-to-video monster flick, although it blows away the similar Tobe Hooper clunker "Crocodile." Maybe worth catching late at night if nothing else's on the tube. |
