PROPHECY 3: THE ASCENT (1999)

Directed by Patrick Lussier

Starring Christopher Walken and Vincent Spano

Not quite enough of Walken in this semi-decent third “Prophecy” film from the folks at Dimension.

After having been turned into a human at the end of Part 2, the angel Gabriel (Walken) still has some special powers, including the ability to read minds. He finds himself embroiled in yet another spiritual battle, this time between a half-human, half-angel and another angel. It’s difficult to really figure out what the hell is going on in this movie’s muddled storyline, but there are plenty of fight scenes and the segments of the film where Walken is actually in the movie are fun to watch.

The flick is also helped by the brief presence of Brad Dourif as a warped assassin who still has faith in God. It’s always a pleasure when Dourif (best known to horror fans as the voice of Chucky in the “Child’s Play” movies) pops up in a horror film to deliver a few lines.

Many of the characters and events from the previous two movies are conveniently forgotten for this entry, which is the weakest in the “Prophecy” series, but a worthwhile rental if you’ve got nothing better to do.

Lussier, an editor on the "Scream" films,  would eventually direct the big-budget "Dracula 2000."
