THE PROPHECY (1995) Starring Christopher Walken and Elias Koteas Virginia Madsen (of "Candyman") also stars in this above-average, supernatural thriller about a war between biblical angels that takes place on Earth. Walken, who at this point in his career had fully embraced the B-movie genre, is terrific at the Angel Gabriel, who is essentially following in Lucifer's footsteps by rebelling against God. Eric Stolz is the Angel Simon, a pro-God warrior who has hidden a "warrior soul" that Walken's character needs to control the universe. It's a long story, folks. Needless to say, these two battle one another, Gabriel for control of the universe, Simon for God. Angels in this film are immortal beings that nonetheless can be killed. They look like ordinary people, but can display their wings if they feel like it. Widen came up with an interesting concept for a movie, and with Walken in the role as chief villain, the flick is entertaining enough, but no masterpiece. The film features some gore and was produced by the wonderful folks at Dimension Films, makers of the "Scream" movies. Followed by the decent sequel, "Prophecy II." |
