PAPERHOUSE (1988) Starring Charlotte Burke and Glenne Headly Rose, the man who directed the incredible "Candyman," debuted as a feature filmmaker this awesome horror film that many consider to be a thinking man's "Nightmare on Elm Street." Burke plays an overly imaginative 11-year-old British girl who, during an illness, falls deep into a fantasy world where she hooks up with a crippled boy (Elliott Spiers) that she's never met before. She also has disturbing and frightening visions of her father (Ben Cross) and a dark, foreboding country house. Although it stars children, "Paperhouse" is intended strictly for adults and even features some terrifying make-up effects. This isn't a "party" horror film, however, and fans of flicks like "Re-Animator" may not get much out of it. But it's ideal if you're looking for something scary, serious and intelligent at the same time. |
