NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990)
Starring Tony Todd and Patricia Tallman George Romero and the other makers of the original 1968 classic always felt bad that they lost a copyright struggle over the first film, making it available for free to any Tom, Dick or Harry who wanted to release it. So they decided to remake it. Romero wrote the new screenplay and makeup effects maestro Savini was recruited to direct. The result is truly mixed. It's not as bad as Gus Van Sant's remake of "Psycho" but it's still pretty forgettable and makes you yearn for the original. Some nice zombie scenes, but not enough gore for it to satisfy real Romero fans. It is fun to see Todd in The ending is changed to an upbeat one. The acting, although more professional than the first film's, is somehow duller. Even the slick and expensive make-up lacks the spunk of the chocolate sauce used for blood in the black-and-white original. In a nutshell, skip it and stick with the original, unless of course you've already seen that a zillion times already and want something more. |
