NECRONOMICON (1996)

Directed by Brian Yuzna

Starring Jeffrey Combs and David Warner

Yuzna, whose best movie is probably "The Dentist," took a stab at making an anthology film with this selection of three tales by the great H.P. Lovecraft. Combs (of "Re-Animator" fame) is a welcome sight, playing Lovecraft himself, who is perusing a copy of the rare and powerful occult book the Necronomicon in a reading room.

The tales he reads involve a man reviving his dead wife (and a monster) using an occult technique; a doctor who grafts skin of freshly killed victims to himself to stay alive; and a pregnant cop who discovers the real reason she and a partner are drawn to a downtown warehouse by a suspect.

The first two tales were directed by Christopher Gans and Shusuke Kaneko, with the Combs tale and the last story helmed by Yuzna.

Like "After Midnight," this is an overly serious and ultimately dull anthology picture that should be avoided. Go see "Creepshow" or "Tales From the Crypt" if you're looking for fun splatter shorts.
