MS. 45 (1981)

Directed by Abel Ferrera

Starring Zoe Tamerlis and Steve Singer

Back in the '80s, when crime was rampant in New York and we all secretly wanted to be vigilantes like Charles Bronson in "Death Wish," a young director by the name of Abel Ferrera continued the film career he'd started with the disappointing clunker "Driller Killer" with this, a now legendary feminist movie with Tamerlis as a mute city worker who begins killing just about every man she runs into.

After being raped twice in one day, Tamerlis kills one of her rapists. Not sure what to do, she gradually gets rid of the body, piece by piece. Meanwhile, things start getting a little out of hand back at the office when her boss makes unwanted advances toward her.

Ferrara's direction is gritty and realistic, and he makes the most out of the fact that his lead character isn't supposed to talk at all. She was mainly selected for her beautiful, haunting looks. When she finally shows up to the Halloween party dressed as a nun with a .45-and begins using the weapon to dispatch the male partiers-we get a classic moment in cult movie making.

Ferrera, of course, would go on making a name for himself as a New York filmmaker, with such critically acclaimed films as "Bad Lieutenant."
