MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (1986)

Directed by Stephen King

Starring Emilio Estevez and Pat Hingle

Underrated Stephen King horror film directed by the writer himself.

Machines are taking over the world and a band of middle Americans find themselves trapped inside a diner, encircled by trucks with a will of their own.

Rockers remember this film as the one movie to be scored by the rock band AC/DC, King's favorite group. Critics panned it and it was a bomb at the box office, despite having Estevez as its star. It's actually a halfway decent horror film that should appeal to King fans. The band of characters trapped in the truck stop is somewhat reminiscent of the situation faced by the protagonists of "Night of the Living Dead"—they're forced to work together after evil forces have taken over the world.

People have dissed the film as total crap, but it isn't that bad, particularly if you're an AC/DC fan. At the same time, "Maximum Overdrive" isn't anything to twist and shout about either. King never directed another movie.
