MANHATTAN BABY (1982)

Despite its pretty cool title, this is Fulci at his very worst. A plotless, atmosphereless and surprisingly tame movie, this follows an archeologist's family's less-than-interesting trip to Egypt. His young daughter (Boccoli) is given an amulet by a strange blind old woman who tells her, "Tombs are for the dead!" The archeologist (Connelly), meanwhile, is blinded by a laser beam that emanates from inside a tomb he's checking out.
Things start to make even less sense when the family heads home. The daughter and her young brother (played by Giovanni Frezza from Fulci's "House by the Cemetery") begin seeing strange things like glowing doors. The lights go off in their Manhattan apartment. Finally, a friend of the wife disappears into thin air while visiting her home. An expert checks out some sand in the home, and confirms that the sand definitely came from Egypt. A cobra makes an appearance and kills another friend of the family. Meanwhile, original music previously heard in Fulci's cult fave "The Beyond" plays in the background.
The very best scene in the film -- a strange antique shop owner is attacked by stuffed birds that mysteriously come to life -- is at the end. But there's precious little to keep you watching until then. Way too talky and slow, this is for hardcore Fulci fans only.
