THE LEGACY (1978)
Starring Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott "The Legacy" is almost forgotten, and with pretty good reason. It stands out as a weak, post-Omen, post-Exorcist, pre-Halloween horror film. Pretty weak stuff, despite the fact that it was written by Jimmy Sangster, a Hammer Horror veteran who directed "Lust for a Vampire" and wrote some of that studio's best output. Ross and Elliott get in a motorcycle accident and find themselves stranded at the manor of a powerful Satanist (John Standing). An upper-class group of satanic followers are at the manor as well, but all seem to wind up being killed in freak accidents. In one particularly memorable and bloody scene a woman is killed by shards of glass. In another, Roger Daltry of The Who dies when he chokes during a meal and fails to survive a gruesome tracheotomy. It all takes place in the context of visitors to a gothic home. Previously, Ross had starred in the brilliant horror film "The Stepford Wives." This marked a bit of a downturn in her career. |
