I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)
Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar
"Scream" scribe Kevin Williamson penned this rather suspenseful mystery, featuring Hewitt as a regretful witness of a fatal car accident. When she and a few teeny-bopper friends run over a man, the drunk driver who was behind the wheel urges them to cover it up. A year later, Hewitt returns home from college only to start receiving messages from someone that read, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." One by one, the teens start being murdered by a mystery slasher.
The flick borrows heavily from "Prom Night" in its concept, but it's infinitely superior. The revelation of the killer is kind of a letdown, but the film delivers enough suspense and creative deaths in its first two thirds to make it worthwhile. Hewitt returned for a sequel, which Williamson didn't write: "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer."
