THE HIDDEN (1987)

Directed by Jack Sholder

Starring Kyle MacLachlan and Michael Mouri

This kick-ass sci-fi horror flick opens with a bank heist and chase: A robber in a black Ferrari speeds from police and deliberately runs over people before he finally runs into a roadblock before being gunned to his death.

Police are confused when they learn the man was a mild-mannered clerk who, before going on a killing spree earlier in the day, was well-liked by neighbors and friends. The officer in charge of the case (Nouri) is content to believe the case is closed. But when other people start committing almost identical crimes—and an FBI agent (MacLachlan) who seems to know why shows up in his office. It turns out that the crimes are being committed by one sociopathic alien, which invades the bodies of people and uses them to commit crimes. MacLachlan, not so surprisingly, is also an alien—in this case a good guy who's been tracking the evil alien for decades.

This well-liked, action-packed film wasn't noticed when it was first released. But when MacLachlan played another FBI agent (Dale Cooper) in the cult TV series "Twin Peaks" in 1989, "The Hidden" enjoyed wide interest.

Highly recommended. A forgettable sequel was also made, minus MacLachlan.
