HEATHERS (1989)
Starring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder
Overrated, but nonetheless seminal, high school pic from New World Pictures introduced the world to the acting talents of Ryder, Slater and Shannen Doherty.
Doherty is one of three reigning bitches at a high school named "Heather," who get their kicks by tormenting unpopular kids at the school.
New kid Slater befriends Heather wannabe Ryder, and the two start killing the Heathers, along with other "cool" kids on campus. They attempt to make the killings look like suicides, and are frustrated when their victims are suddenly worshipped as martyrs on campus.
I think this film, which was inspired by the very similar "Massacre at Central High," had a pretty big impact on "Scream." But it's no masterpiece. Despite some hilarious black humor, it's pretty predictable and, for a hardened horror fan, ain't all that disturbing.
Worth catching though.
