BEYOND THE DOOR (1975) Directed by Olivio Assonitis Starring Juliet Mills and Richard Johnso Leave it to the Italians to rip up every successful U.S. horror film they can. In the 1980s it was zombies and slasher movies. But in the 1970s it was "The Exorcist" all the way. It's difficult for people in the 1990s to comprehend just how popular "The Exorcist" was when it was released in 1973. It was a phenomenon. Everyone and their mother was talking about it. It was re-released again and again and again, because there weren't VCRs in those days, and everyone wanted to see Linda Blair puke soup and turn her head around 360 degrees. Those sure were the days. So naturally it spawned hordes of imitators, one of the worst of which was "Beyond the Door." Juliet Mills is a pregnant woman who is possessed by a demon! Special effects include the standard puking of split pea soup. There's also a pretty impressive scene where an eye turns up in a whiskey glass and, when it's thrown away, the camera takes on the point of the view of the eyeball. Pretty cool. But, all in all, the flick's pretty lame, without much a plot. Johnson plays Mills' ex-lover, who is dead but doesn't know it. Hard to find on video these days but it's still floating around some old video stores. Beware. Despite the fact that some people with too much time on their hands actually like this movie.
