APT PUPIL (1998)
Starring Ian McCullen and Brad Renfro Brilliant adaptation of a Stephen King short story turned out to be one of the best films ever based on anyone of his works. I's an ironically timely film as well, given the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado. Like "Scream," the "Apt Pupil" is an amazing look at how evil can inject itself into the lives of young people. Renfro plays a geeky and (it's hinted) quite gay high school senior who uncovers the truth about an elderly neighbor (McCullen): He's a Nazi war criminal. He blackmails the man, threatening to turn him in unless he tells him detailed stories about what it was like gassing the Jews. McCullen becomes the boy's mentor, training him in the art of being a ruthless liar and killer. Both McCullen and Renfro are incredible in their roles, capturing the twisted, sado-masochistic and homo-erotic dynamic alive between these two characters. The ending is especially chilling. Singer was sued when he had a number of teenage extras appear in a shower scene nude. Some of the extras were underaged. Don't let that distract you. This is an awesome movie. |
