DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST (2005)
Starring Stellan Skarsgård and Gabrielle Man Sitting through just the first 10 minutes of Paul Schrader's original version of "Exorcist: The Beginning," it becomes clear why the producers decided to scrap this version and hire veteran horror filmmaker Renny Harlin to remake it. Schrader did not want to make a horror film, and "Dominion" barely qualifies as one. Gone are the cheap thrills and Indiana Jones-style adventure present in the Harlin version. What's left is a kind of meandering, suspense-less, dull student film. Truly forgettable stuff. Refer to the "Exorcist: The Beginning" review for the general storyline. Missing is all the fun stuff, from the visit to the insane asylum, the upside down crucifixes, the over-the-top possession at the end of the film, cheap mystery storyline, etc. Basically "Dominion" is "Exorcist: The Beginning" without any of the fun. Schrader's last horror film had been the similarly dull "Cat People." Pass this one, and stick with Harlin's version.
