FLATLINERS (1990)
Starring Keifer Sutherland and Julia Roberts
The big buzz about this movie is that it brought Sutherland and Roberts together. The two dates for awhile, and it was a big to-do in the tabloid press. This film was filmed before "Pretty Woman," but was released after, and Roberts' presence definitely gave it it plenty of box office.
Schumacher followed up the great "Lost Boys" with this moralistic, fairly kick-ass film about medical students who experiment with near death experiences, by deliberately creating conditions of clinical death in each other, before resurrecting one another using emergency procedures. As a result of this dangerous game, the young, good-looking medical students find themselves haunted by the demons of their own past. The victim or victims of any wrong they'd committed keep showing up in potentially lethal encounters.
The film is yet another analogy for drug addiction from director Schumacher. The near-death experiences are initially exhilarating and euphoric for the med students, but have nightmarish consequences. Schumacher would later sink into making dull, commercial court dramas and weak "Batman" films.
