FIRESTARTER (1984)

Directed by Mark Lester

Starring Drew Baarrymore and George C. Scott

Stephen King adaptations don't get much worse than this.

Well, actually they do. "The Mangler" was worse than this. But not much worse.

A child Drew Barrymore was roped into starring in this after starring in that grotesque smash hit "E.T." She stars as a psychic child who can start fires when she's angry. The government naturally wants her. This pits her and her family against agents from the good olde U.S. of A. David Keith is her Dad. Like the rest of the cast, he looks confused about what his character is supposed to be doing or feeling.

Although the novel is apparently good, this is an unwatchably bad movie and was one of the reasons that studios actually began taking King's names off of film titles when bomb after bomb was produced under his moniker. King can't be blamed for this disaster, however. Some later King films, particularly those where he served as screenwriter, worked. His lack of involvement with this project may have been what made it go up in flames.
