THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE (1971)

Directed by Jean Brismee

Starring Erika Blanc and Jean Servais

In the late 1990s, Britain's Redemption Films began re-releasing some gloriously remastered DVDs of Euro-trash films from the 1970s. One of the best they put out was this cult classic about a priest's battle with the devil in a gothic European castle.

Erika Blanc wears a nifty outfit that Cher would envy, adding some camp appeal to a very atmospheric, low-budget movie. As a succubus (that's a female demon who seduces sinners to their doom) she's targeting seven tourists stranded at the castle and forced to spend the night. Each victim represents one of the seven deadly sins.

It's a near classic, and totally worth seeing. Sex, creative deaths, a shocking opening and a nice religious storyline add up to an enjoyable horror film.

The DVD is especially good, giving you the option of seeing the film either with subtitles or dubbed in English. But if you opt for the VHS version of the film, you'll be able to see great trailers for other European splatter flicks from the 1970s. Those trailers aren't on the DVD.

All in all, the total package is groovy stuff. The remastered print looks wonderful -- the only quality we've come to expect from Salvation.
