THE DENTIST PART 2: BRACE YOURSELF (1998)

When I first rented this Yuzna film, I figured it was going to be a dud. I mean, the first film was great, but where else could they go with the story? Well, incredibly this film is on a par with the first, itself one of the best splatter films of the '90s. Although these two films are very similar to the "Stepfather" series, in many respects they're superior, with a greater sense of humor and some outrageous effects.
Bernsen once again returns as the mad dentist, who went homicidal in the last film after catching his wife performing oral sex on the pool man. He's broken out of a mental institution and escaped to a small community where he hopes to build a new life for himself as the town dentist. (He kills the area's original doctor.) Naturally, he starts falling in love with another woman (McWhirther). When he suspects she's cheating on him, he goes crazy again. As more and more people slowly realize that he's the mad doctor from Los Angeles, he has to kill them to cover his tracks.
Yuzna proves once again that he's better at Hitchcockian horror than the "Re-Animator" clones he used to direct. Aside from the story taking a few liberties (he's able to move into the new town a little bit too easily considering what a sensation his original murders were), Yuzna delivers the suspense, gore, humor and style we all crave from high-class splatter films.
This is an absolute must see.
