THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1988) Directed by J.R. BookwalterStarring Pete Ferry and Bogdan Peric Flesh-eating zombies on the rampageagain. "Evil Dead" director Sam Raimi served as an uncredited executive producer of this tribute to George Romero's "Living Dead" movies, so it's not surprising that the leading character (played by Ferry) is named "Raimi." Pretty good rip-off of "Dawn of the Dead" isn't as bad as the worst zombie films from Italy. The end of the film borrows a page from the Waco massacre, with a cult defending the zombies against a law enforcement onslaught because they believe the living dead takeover is part of God's' will. Decent gore effects make it a worthwhile watch for zombie film fansbut let's face it, as a movie this thing sucks. It was the first film of Bookwalter, who went onto make films like "Robot Ninja" and "The Sandman."
