DARKNESS (1994) Directed by Leif Jonker Starring Gary Miller and Michael Gisick The tagline, "Even the dead will scream," is cool. Too bad the movie is a little bit too much of a film student-style project to make it that worthwhile. Extremely gory, but excruciatingly low budget, this vampire flick was basically a student film tribute to "Dawn of the Dead." It does feature some shocking, balls-to-the-wall gore effects. But the budget is so low, the acting so bad and production values so shoddy you feel like you're watching a suck-ass high school film more than something coming even close to a real movie. This is no indie-film classic. That didn't prevent it from being hyped like hell by Film Threat Video Magazine, which, by no strange coincidence, also happens to be its distributor. It's mildly impressive because it really does go over-the-top with the gore, but it all gets boring after a while. It's Jonker's only film. If you're not really into gore, skip it. There are some rather impressive exploding heads at the end, however. |
