CHERRY FALLS (2000)

Directed by Geoffrey Wright

Starring Michael Biehn and Brittany Murphy

A pretty decent "Scream" rip off, "Cherry Falls" was actually better than some of the slasher films that made it to theaters the same year - most notably the atrocious "Urban Legends: Final Cut" and the not-so-good "Valentine." For some reason, "Cherry Falls" only debuted on TV in the U.S.

Biehn plays the town sheriff of Cherry Falls, where a series of murders is being committed targeting high school virgins. His daughter (Murphy) suspects that her father knows more about a possible link between the killings and his own past. Like most other virgins in the community, she debates whether or not to pop her own cherry to prevent becoming the serial killer's next victim.

With a script that borrows liberally from the "Scream" films, "Cherry Falls" is one of the best of the late 1990s slasher films and it's a shame it wasn't given the theatrical release it deserved. The film may well have been heading to theaters before a little something called the Littleton Massacre put a major damper on the horror genre in 2000.

The film was heavily cut for the U.S. and versions in Germany run about eight minutes longer. Cut scenes mostly involve a climactic teen "orgy" where the entire high school tries to lose its virginity. The version released to video in the U.S. is rated R, but seems like it could have received a PG-13.
