CASTLE FREAK (1995)

Directed by Stuart Gordon

Starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton

Combs and Crampton, both veterans from Gordon's previous masterpieces "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond," are reunited for this dull "madman hiding in the castle" feature shot on location in Italy for Full Moon Pictures. A maniac locked up in the castle that Combs and Crampton just inherited starts killing people and Combs gets blamed for one of the murders. No, Crampton doesn't take off her clothes in this one, but there is one really gruesome sex/death scene involving a town prostitute, gross enough to prevent this pic from being rated.

It's always fun to see Combs and Crampton in decent roles in a horror film, especially when it's directed by Gordon, and this film is no exception. Nowhere near as solid as "From Beyond" or "Re-Animator," of course, but it's recommended only because it delivers enough of the goods to justify its existence. It also came out at a time when horror films were few and far between.
