THE UNTOLD STORY (1992)

Directed by Danny Lee, Herman Yau

Starring Anthony Wong

Intensely gory slasher film from Hong Kong has high production values and moderately impressive gore effects. It isn't exactly a horror film so much as just an exercise in bad taste. But it's entertaining. It certainly earned a reputation as the sickest movie ever, although it actually isn't as bloody as the Monty Python-esque "Dead Alive."

Wong really quite effective as a sociopathic owner of the "Eight Immortals Restaurant," who gained control over the establishment by murdering its original owner. He then kills an employee who learns that he's a cheater in a Hong Kong gambling game. Like any cook in a psycho-slasher film, Wong uses the employee's flesh to make his popular buns taste so good, hence the title "Bunman." It's an oft-told tale: Some cook's dishes are the finest in town and it's because he uses human meat in them. Remember "Motel Hell" and "Sweeney Todd"?

This film is way too over-the-top for my tastes. Showing kids being killed is senseless, even by my low standards. This is sick stuff. I'm glad they don't make films like this in America.  The film goes under many cheesy names, including "Human Meat Pies: The Untold Story" and "Untold Story: Human Meat Roast Pork Buns."
