THE BEYOND (1982)
Starring Katherine MacColl and David Warbeck Really god-awful occult zombie flick from Fulci filmed in New Orleans has a woman inheriting a house that happens to be situated on one of the seven gates to hell, not unlike the story we encountered in the big-budget 1970s horror pic "The Sentinel." I know, I know this film has its followers, among them some very sophisticated, intelligent and respectable horror film fans. But I don't know what people see in it. I guess I'm just not a hardcore Fulci fan, although I do love "Zombie." Many consider this to be Fulci's masterpiece and Quentin Tarantino spent the time and money to re-release it as a midnight movie in 1998. The flick does have terrific atmosphere. Some also claim it has the best script of any of his movies. I dunno. When the gate opens, zombies start chomping on anyone who gets in their way. There's also a mysterious blind girl hanging about. Pretty surreal stuff from trash master Fulci and the highlight of the film has a guy's face being eaten alive by spiders. But it's nothing to write to momma about. This is no masterpiece and why it has such a huge cult following is way "beyond" me. |
