BASKET CASE 3: THE PROGENY (1991)

Directed by Frank Henenlotter

Starring Kevin Van Hentenryck and Annie Ross

The saga continues. This film looks as if it may have been shot back-to-back with Part 2. Ross returns as the deranged "house mom" of a home for freaks, where basket-case freak Belial and his brother now live. As the townfolk begin to meddle into the home's affairs, the mother, Belial and the rest of the freaks have to go to war with the town law enforcement.

Belial, meanwhile, has gotten another lookalike freak pregnant, hence the title "Progeny." Easily the best scene in the movie has Belial commandeering a robot-like device, doing battle with the town sheriff. Classic. The flick also has a mildly amusing spoof of "Geraldo."

Still, not as good as the first one, but probably better than Part 2. One gets the sense that Henenlotter made the two "Basket Case" sequels strictly for the money, however. Part of what made the first film should an irresistible cult classic was that it was set in the seediest areas of New York. These two follow ups were shot out in the country. But you can't have everything. All in all, Part 3 is a pretty fun flick.
