AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS (1997)
Starring Tom Everett Scott and Julie Delpy Tragically lame sequel to John Landis' classic "An American Werewolf in London" is surprisingly dumb, given it was directed by the man who brought us "Mute Witness." Another American guy (Everett Scott) heads to Europe, this time to Paris naturally, and falls in love with a suicidal French girl (Delpy) who happens to be the member of a coven of werewolves. It's hard to begin with what's wrong this film. First off, you immediately miss the taste in music that Landis displayed in his film: Oldies that he found dealing strictly with the moon. This film features contemporary hit music by acts like Bush. Then there's the humor. Landis' movie was genuinely funny. This film's attempts at comedy fall flat on their face, and as we all know there's just nothing quite as bad as seeing a film that wants to be funny, but can't be. Finally, the werewolf make-up effects are remarkably unremarkable. They're created using computer animation and somehow manage to look like something out of "Jurassic Park." I know that's thrilling to some people, but I've always preferred the old-fashioned, Rick Baker prosthetics to the stuff that looks like something out of "Antz." The film is low on gore content as well. It doesn't even have any decent sex. In short, skip this movie. What a shame Landis didn't direct this one.
