From the director of "Tombs of the Blind Dead," the film has been released stateside under the title "When the Screaming Stopped" on Lightning Video in the 1980s and was released in Europe as "Las Garras de Lorelei". Despite the fact that it's maker crafted some of the best Spanish horror of the 1970s, this movie is not one of the nation's finest films. It's based upon a Rhineland legend of "Lorelei," a siren (Helga Line) that lives in a gothic underwater cave near the Rhine. Sometimes the gorgeous woman turns into a scaly monster that rips out the hearts of young women. A hunter (Kendall) is hired by a girls' boarding school – where the girls typically sit back in bikinis by the pool -- to kill off the woman/beast.
Kendall (who also starred in de Ossorio's "Return of the Blind Dead") doesn't believe in the Loreley, so when he runs across her wearing a hot green bikini by the lake, he doesn't believe she could possibly be the creature. He kisses her in a warehouse and the two start a relationship. Meanwhile, a local scientist is hoping to kill the Loreley as well, and has come up with scientific proof that the creature can turn from human to lizard. And the hot girl school professor develops a crush on the hunter.
Groovy '70s fashion and music, a plethora of scantily clad Spanish women and some surprisingly gruesome open-heart murders make this a real must for campy grind house movie fans. One of the funniest scenes has some of the girl students blowing kisses at the hunter from their dorm rooms as sexy sax music booms from the soundtrack. The film is also, of course, a must for fans of Helga Line, who appeared in some of the best European fear films from the 1970s, including "Horror Express" and "The Vampire's Night Orgy."
The back of the Lightning Video box advertised: "You survived HALLOWEEN. You made it through NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. You've come a long way, but are you ready for WHEN THE SCREAMING STOPS?" In 2007, the film finally got a proper DVD release from Victory Films, in a gorgeous print remastered direct from the original negative.
