Directed by Larry Cohen
Starring Deborah Raffin
Sandy Dennis
Sylvia Sidney Tony Lo Bianco
Tony Lo Bianco plays a New York City police officer investigating a series of bizarre killing sprees in which all of the perpetrators (one played by Andy Kaufman) offer the simple explanation: "God told me to." The trail leads to leads to a shadowy Christ-like figure and the mother who claims to have been inseminated during an alien abduction experience.
Director Larry Cohen, best known for "It's Alive," delivers a dark and intelligent horror film which is aided greatly by the seedy New York City locations and claustrophobic feel. The film adeptly captures the world-weary attitude of post-Watergate America of the '70s.
Lo Bianco is outstanding as a man who begins to question the foundations of his religious beliefs as the pieces of the mystery begin to fall into place.
A rare film that is equally frightening due to what is implied as to what is shown. Highly recommended!!
The title was changed to "Demon" in some areas where newspapers and TV stations refused to run ads with the original titled which they considered "blasphemous."
