Phantoms (1998)
Directed by Joe Chappelle

Starring Ben Affleck Peter O'Toole Rose McGowan

It was fun to see Rose McGowan, who played the gorgeous friend of Sidney in "Scream," back in a horror film again. Contemporary audiences might get an even bigger kick out of seeing Ben Affleck in a very, very early role. But this was no "Scream" and didn't even enjoy a theatrical release, something it clearly would have gotten after Affleck blew up into the superstar he is today.

McGowan is dragged to a tiny mountain town by her sister (Joanna Going) only to find that virtually everyone in the community is dead. It soon becomes apparent that the townsfolk were killed by supernatural forces and when the sisters run into some law enforcement officers (one of whom is played by Liev Schreiber, who played Cotton Weary in "Scream" 1 and 2) find themselves fighting for their lives against an army of phantom-like creatures. O'Toole shows up as a government expert who knows what they're up against.

O.K. Dimension Films release is worth catching on cable. It has the unremarkable distinction of being one of the better films based upon a Dean Koontz story.
