Directed by Tor Ramsey
Starring Marty Schiff Tom Savini
Yet another semi-sequel to "Night of the Living Dead," "Children" was produced by John Russo, co-writer of the original classic film and director of the horrific "Night of the Living Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition."
"Children" is a mild step up from the horrible "special edition" of "Night" that he produced. The film opens in 1986, with redneck cops doing battle with the living dead, following what's supposedly a "second outbreak" of zombie infestation following the original one in 1968 (basis for "Night of the Living Dead"). Tom Savini is one of the zombie kilers. Although listed as the star of the movie, his character is the first to be killed off.
Flash forward 14 years later. Somehow, magically, the whole world has gone back to normal after the zombie onslaught of '86, which may have just been isolated to a local area (never mind that in "Night" it was supposed to have been a worldwide phenomenon.
Some kids in a party van are killed when they almost run over one remaining zombie who happens to still be walking around town. Their van goes careening off a cliff. There's plenty of talk about missing bodies at a nearby cemetery. Then, suddenly, the dead start attacking people again. A local cop who was around for the 1968 incident has to explain to people the community's hidden zombie past, as if people wouldn't have remembered.
A terribly written and directed movie, "Children" only shines during the brief moments when there are actually zombies on screen. The opening segment of the movie is a bit reminiscent of "Dawn of the Dead" -- and features Tom Savini, which is always fun -- but it's so poorly lit, the humans looker bluer than the zombies they're hunting.
Still, this is the first real zombie film to hit video in a long time, so if you're a fan of the genre, you'll probably want to check it out. But go in with the lowest of expectations. Remember, this is a John Russo movie. By the way, the title comes from the fact that some of the characters were children at the time of the first zombie onslaught.
