Fall Horror Movie Guide    Share

June 26, 2009 It's been a pretty slow year for horror on the big screen, with many theatrical releases being PG-13 or remakes. But that's all about to change beginning in August, when the Fall season kicks in and a slew of original and many R-rated horror films hit screens. Here's what's hitting cineplexes this Autumn.

August 28

Halloween II: Not technically a remake! Rob Zombie's sequel to his own remake will likely be better than the 2007 film it is following up. Zombie's hands are less tied down this time around, apparently.

The Final Destination: The fourth "Final Destination" film is in 3D and it is from David R. Ellis, the director of the second film -- the goriest of the bunch.

September 4

Carriers: Four friends flee a pandemic and learn that they are, in fact, more dangerous than the virus. Stars Chris Pine of Captain Kirk/Star Trek fame. Directed by Alexx and David Pastor.

September 11

Sorority Row: Another horror remake -- this one of a really bad, forgotten, out-of-print eighties slasher film. A group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked by a serial killer. Director Stewart Hendler ins't known for much other than this.

September 18

Jennier's Body: From Diablo Cody, the writer of "Juno" comes this film starring the babetitious lead female of "Transformers"! Megan Fox took off her clothes for one scene of this film -- and paparazzi pics spread across the Web like wildfire. But the film is actually just PG-13. A newly possessed cheerleader turns into a killer who specializes in offing her male classmates. Director Karyn Kusama isn't known for much else.

Pandorum: A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities. It's a Pandorum of drama and horror out there! Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid star. Director Christian Alvart is known for the German horror film "Antibodies."

October 9

Zombieland: America's answer to "Shaun of the Dead" looks excellent. Woody Harrleson stars. Bill Murray and Amber Heard co-star. Director Ruben Fleischer hasn't done much else I'm afraid.

October 16

The Road: Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron star in an end-of-the-world thriller from director John Hillcoat.

The Stepfather: A PG13 remake to an R rated '80s horror classic that isn't even on DVD. How about making the original available first, then releasing this? Heck, the original stars Terry O'Quinn, who's now a megastar thanks to "Lost". Why not release his greatest horror movie already -- instead of just remaking it?

October 23

The Canyon: Newlyweds get terrorized in the Grand Canyon! From director Richard Harrah.

Saw VI: No year would be complete without a "Saw" film. The franchise's films have been steadily losing money at the box office, but still make enough to justify more. These are pretty clever movies.

October 30

The Box: A PG-13 horror film with Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella, directed by Richard Kelly. I believe this is a remake of a "Twilight Zone" episode which was about a box that grants wishes, but will kill someone in the process -- or something like that.

Night of the Demons: This remake features a cast of uber hotties, including the bodacious Diora Baird.
