Vote for the Best Horror Movies of 2008    Share

December 28, 2008 2008 was a pretty interesting year for horror films. There were a lot of good horror movies made in '08. But I'd argue the best films didn't come from the U.S., but rather France and Sweden. I think easily the best film of the year was "Let the Right One In," which only saw a limited release stateside.

The best U.S. production may have been the barely released "Baby Blues", a film that blows away anyone with the guts to watch it and is guaranteed to become a cult classic. A big commercial hit this year was "The Strangers", which proved that R-rated horror can still reign at the box office. Yes, "Cloverfield" made tons of cash, but it was PG-13.

This year, we're conducting our annual vote on the best films of the year. We're going back to the old system of having you pick your own Top 10, then emailing it into us. Nominees are films released to U.S. theaters or DVDs in 2008 -- not films released in Europe or debuting at film festivals this year. For instance, "Mother of Tears" is on the list because it was released to U.S. theaters in 2008. Europeans saw in it in '07.

Your top movie in the list (your pick as the No. 1 horror film of the year) will be given 10 points. The second film on their list will be given 9 points, and so on, until the 10th on the list received 1 point. Email your list to ESplatter editor Lucius Gore at luciusgore@hotmail.com. Then we'll tally all the results, and gauge what ESplatter readers felt the top films of 2008 were. This is the best way to gauge what the best films were since a movie that receives a ton of Number 1 and Number 2 rankings can still actually become the Number 1 film. In short, you don't just get a single vote.
