Forrest J. Ackerman RIP    Share

December 5, 2008 Forrest J. Ackerman, the legendary editor/writer of Famous Monsters of Filmland and collector has passed away. He was 92.

The AP reports today:

Ackerman died Thursday of heart failure at his Los Angeles home, said Kevin Burns, head of Prometheus Entertainment and a trustee of Ackerman's estate.

Ackerman has been credited with coining the phrase "science fiction." He had a huge impact on horror fans as the man behind Famouns Monsters of Filmland, the horror mag that predated Fangoria, but stopped publishing in 1983.

I can remember seeing the first photos of films such as "Friday the 13th" and "Alien" in this magazine as a teenager. It published from 1958-1983. Its heyday was the 1960s.

Forrest will be sorely missed. For more about him, read this obituary at Cinefantastique Online.
