'Cemetery Man'
Heading to DVD in USA
October 1, 2004
--
Anchor Bay is working on a "Cemetery Man" DVD for the U.S.! Here's
what
HorrorChannel.com had to say:
"Anchor Bay Entertainment's Michael Felsher stopped by Dread Central for our first horror biz chat last night, and with him he brought a coffin-load of announcements worthy enough to make you do some sort of interpretive dance. ... Felsher revealed that Anchor Bay is prepping a Special Edition of Michele Soavi's Dellamorte Dellamore (a.k.a. Cemetery Man)! A 20th Century Fox representative, in a chat at another site in 2003, claimed that they would have a U.S. disc in stores sometime this fall (or was it last?). It appears that Anchor Bay has worked out an agreement to release it themselves, or perhaps it's part of the Bay's recent deal with Fox. Nevertheless, it's coming! Felsher was hesitant to divulge many more details about the specifics of the disc since we're still a year away from its release. And speaking of the Fox deal, Felsher added that Alex Winter's Freaked (previously announced) is moving along smoothly. Winter is jazzed to be involved, and Anchor Bay's production team is speaking to Freaked's FX team (which included Screaming Mad George) about joining in. The 1975 Peter Fonda vs. Satan worshiper flick Race With the Devil is also on the way!
"Here are some of the other projects Anchor Bay has simmering in the cauldron: Dario Argento's Trauma (the company is working to get the best and longest version of the film possible; they've also spoken to Tom Savini, who says he has hours of behind-the-scenes footage that may make it into this Special Edition); Mick Garris' Quicksilver Highway; Class of 1984; Bad Dreams; Visiting Hours; the post-apocalyptic thriller Damnation Alley; a new edition of George Romero's Season of the Witch; and The Entity (soon to be remade by Ringu's Hideo Nakata). Sadly, Felsher confirmed that there are no plans for DVDs of Night of the Creeps or The Monster Squad...they're owned by another distributor."

Fox, MGM 2004
Horror DVDs
June 28, 2004
-- Fox is finally releasing that last Jamie Lee Curtis horror movie
holdout, "Terror Train," to DVD Sept. 7, along with yet another
release of the public domain George Romero classic "Night of the
Living Dead," in both colorized and black-and-white versions,
and featuring a commentary track from Mike Nelson of Mystery Science
Theater.
Also hitting Fox DVD will be "The Alligator People"," The Boston Strangler",
"Island of the Dead", "Reign in Darkness", the
Marlee Matlin thriller "Hear No Evil", "Blood Moon, Creepy
Crawlers" and "Basket Case: The Progeny."
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has announced that it will be releasing Larry
Cohen's "It's Alive," along
with Cohen's "It's Alive II"
and "It's Alive III"
on a separate double-feature disc, to DVD on October 5. On that same
date, Warner will unleash "The
Hunger," "Return
of the Living Dead 2" and "He
Knows You're Alone."
MGM has let slip a number of their Midnite Movie series
double-feature titles, due to hit store shelves sometime in August.
Unfortunately we've seen most of them before: "Abominable Dr. Phibes"
and "Dr. Phibes Rises Again"; "Fall of the House of Usher"/"Pit and
the Pendulum"; "Tentacles" and "Kingdom of the Spider"; and lat but
not least "Count Yorga, Vampire" and "Return of Count Yorga."
Apparently even more MGM titles are going to be added to this list,
all of which will be due in stores sometime in August. But the bad
news is "Blood on Satan's Claw" (a title owned by MGM) will NOT be
hitting U.S. DVD anytime this year.
'Dawn of the
Dead' Specs -- Original New Special Edition and the Remake Special
Editions!
Updated
June 15, 2004 --

Romero.
Watch for that set in September. Then on October 5, the "Dawn of
the Dead" remake hits stores in four different versions. Here's what
DVDFile had to say:
"Universal Studios Home Video has just announced the arrival of "Dawn
of the Dead", the hit remake which make its DVD debut on October 5th in
no less than four configurations. Set for release in both R-rated and Unrated
Director's Cut version (the latter running 9 minutes longer than the theatrical
release), each with separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen options, all
include Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks, audio commentary with director Zack
Snyder and producer Eric Newman, "The Lost Tape: Andy's Terrifying Last Days
Revealed" exclusive short film, the "Special Bulletin: We Interrupt This
Program!" and "Surviving the Dawn" featurettes and theatrical trailers. The
theatrical version will also include the deleted scenes from the Director's Cut
as a supplement, while the unrated releases will also boast the "Raising the
Dead," "Attack of the Living Dead" and "Splitting Headaches: Anatomy of
Exploding Heads" featurette and PC enhanced extras to be announced. Retail is
$29.95 any way you slice it."
'Lemora'
Specs and Cover
June 6, 2004
--
It's been a long time coming, but Synapse has readied "Lemora" (aka, "Lemora:
Lady Dracula") for a 2-disc special edition release on DVD August 31.
Here's the cover art. It will include a new anamorphic widescreen
transfer, commentary, a DVD-Rom script and more.
Specs on Anchor
Bay's 'Witchboard'
June 5,
2004 -- Anchor Bay has announced the release of "Witchboard" and
"Night of the Demons," and here's what
DVDFile.com had to report on
the specs of these '80s films, both from the same director. There's
also news on a "Trauma" DVD, from director Dario Argento, sometime in
early 2005:"Specs have come in from Anchor Bay Entertainment for two more cult classics. 1985's Witchboard, starring a pre-Whitesnake Tawny Kitaen, arrives with a new 1.85 anamorphic transfer, the original DD mono audio track, an audio commentary (with director Kevin Tenney, executive producer Walter Josten and producer Jeff Geoffray), a making-of featurette, original trailer and TV spots. Tenney's 1988 follow-up Night of the Demons also arrives with a new 1.85 anamorphic transfer, a DD2.0 stereo track, audio commentary (with the same participants), the 'My Demon Nights with Linnea Quigley' featurette, an original promo reel, theatrical and video trailers and TV spots. Each disc will be released on August 24th with a retail price of $19.98.
"Anchor Bay has also announced that plans are underway for a big special edition of Dario Argento's wicked Trauma. According to AB's Michael Felsher, look for the set to feature the first domestically-released widescreen transfer and plenty of extras. 'We're aware that there are additional scenes that were present in a workprint that has circulated for a long time and appeared in the European release that surfaced not too long ago, so we're going to do everything we can to make this the ultimate version of the film-certainly the longest one seen in North America.' Trauma should be released in the first half of 2005. Stay tuned for more details by the end of this summer."
2004
Pre-Halloween DVD Line Up
April 20, 2004
-- The spring and summer are shaping up to be good ones
for the horror on DVD, as a number of much sought-after
titles are heading their way to disc.
Perhaps the biggest news for those of us with widescreen
TVs (very few of us immature horror fans have them, but
oh well) is the release of Lucio Fulci's "Zombie" in anamorphic
widescreen by Shriek Show. The two-disc release will come
with with a bonus disc featuring four hours of special features!
The new version of this film has been on hold as a DVD for almost
a year, but you'll finally be able to get your hands on it on
July 27. So you may be able to chuck your old Anchor Bay version of this
film, although Shriek Show's releases of other films have occasionally
been criticized for "overcropping" movies (i.e., cropping them
so they are anamorphic widescreen, but losing picture data in the
process). Hopefully that problem won't exist here. "Zombie" is
certainly Lucio Fulci's finest movie and definitely needs to be seen
widescreen to be appreciated.
Shriek Show is also releasing Lucio Fulci's "Lizard in a Woman's
Skin," from 1971. But the title is on hold with no word on a release
date. Presumably, it will hit stores around the time "Zombie" does.
On Jun3 29, Bob Clark's classic "Monkey's Paw" update
"Deathdream" is heading to DVD in a digitally remastered,
anamorphic widescreen format, courtesy of the folks at
Blue Underground. On the same day, "Uncle Sam" will
hit DVD as well (a pretty bad slasher movie, really).
On the same day, a limited edition 2-disc set of
"Driller Killer" will hit disc, from Cult Epics.
Meanwhile, Universal plans to release "Ssssss," "The Legacy,"
"The Funhouse," "The Sentinel" and "Ghost Story" to DVD on
Sept. 6. "Ssssss" and "The Legacy" are new to disc, but the
other two have only been available in nonanamorphic widescreen.
Anchor Bay's Hot
New Lineup

March 19, 2004
-- Anchor Bay has updated its lineup of upcoming DVDs. Topping the list is Dario Argento's "The Card Player," which has already seen a theatrical release in Europe. Argento's films generally don't make it onto the big screen in the U.S. Also up for release are "Night of the Demons," "Witchboard," the long-in-coming "Evilspeak" and Romero's "Season of the Witch." Click
here for the full lineup!
'Blacula'
Heading to DVD
October 6, 2003
-- After Halloween every year, the horror DVD market tends to slow
down a bit. At least MGM is offering up one horror film package in
January of 2004: "Blacula" and "Scream Blacula Scream," as a double
feature in its Soul Cinema series. No extras have been announced.
'Friday
the 13th' Box Set Due Next Year
September 22, 2003
-- At Maniafest in LA this weekend, a Paramount exec reportedly
announced that a "Friday the 13th" DVD box set is on the way, that
unrated versions of the films were a distinct possiblity, and Joseph
Zito, director of "Friday" Part 4, mentioned that deleted scenes from
that film were also scurrying about. An unrated version of the first
film is already available outside the U.S. Thanks to Bloody-Disgusting.
DVDFile: 'People
Under the Stairs,' 'They Live' Heading to DVD
July 15, 2003
-- DVDFile reports that Universal plans to release the excellent Wes
Craven shocker "People Under the Stairs" to DVD October 7, along with
"Serpent and the Rainbow" and the John Carpenter films "They Live" and
"Prince of Darkness." "Child's Play 3" will also be released on disc
in the U.S. for the first time on that day.
'Hills
Have Eyes' Cover
July 10, 2003
-- Fangoria sneak peeked the cover of the upcoming double-disc set for
"Hills Have Eyes," a DVD loaded with special features about Wes Craven
and one of his best films:
Disc One:
• Widescreen presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs
• Audio commentary by writer/director Wes Craven and producer Peter LockeDisc Two:
• Looking Back On THE HILLS HAVE EYES: An all-new documentary featuring interviews with Craven, Locke, actors Michael Berryman, Dee Wallace, Janus Blythe, Robert Houston and Susan Lanier and director of photography Eric Saarinen

Watch for the DVD Sept. 23.
A Busy Summer
for Horror

June 8, 2003
-- Thanks to Blue Underground and MGM, this summer is going to be one
of the hottest for fans of sleazy '70s horror.
William Lustig's new Blue Underground label is unearthing some long
out-of-print titles, among them the super-disgusting "Snuff," a
cheesy exploitation movie that took advantage of the paranoia
about snuff movies in the early 1970s. The film is garbage, but
the ending a major shock. Look for it July 27.
On the same day, BU will unleash "Venom," a film that was previously
known as "Spasms," and boasts impressive special effects from Dick Smith.
"Spasms" is a long-lost early '80s horror film, starring Klaus Kinski,
Michael Gough, Susan George and Oliver Reed!
Most important is BU's landmark new edition of "Dead and Buried,"
a very cool horror film from the early 1980s, from the makers
of "Alien." It's an awesome little movie, very gory, very outrageous. Good stuff.
Also in July -- on July 1 -- Grindhouse Releasing is unveiling the uncut version
of "I Drink Your Blood" -- not a great movie, but a pretty
entertaining piece of hippies-are-evil schlock from the
very early 1970s. This is the rarely seen uncut version of the film.
On July 22, Anchor Bay is releasing "Fear No Evil,"
an entertaining antichrist film, "Silent Night Deadly Night"
and "Silent Night Deadly Night 2" in a double feature set,
and another issue of "The Wicker Man." Synapse is unleashing
"Brain Damage" on the same day.
Things really pick up in August, when Anchor Bay releases
the 25th Anniversary Edition of "Halloween." The one major
addition to this version is director commentary featuring
John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curits. It hits shelves Aug. 5.
The same day, "The Omega Man" (starring Charlton Heston)
is being released to disc by Warner Bros.
On Aug. 12, "House of 1000 Corpses comes out from
Lion's Gate, along with "Boogeyman II" from Image and
Spielberg's "Duel" from Universal. The 2-disc Anchor Bay
edition of "Day of the Dead" arrives Aug. 19.
But things really, really, really go crazy on August 26 --
truly a landmark day in the history of DVD horror. Here's what we're getting:
"God Told Me To" (Blue Underground)
"Q: The Winged Serpent (Blue Underground)
"The Brood" (MGM)
"Squirm" (MGM)
"Vampire Lovers/Countess Dracula" (MGM)
"The Howling: Special Edition" (MGM)
"The Haunted Palace/Tower of London" (MGM)
"Tomb of Ligeia/ An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe" (MGM)
This is the day that MGM unleashes its finest. At the top of this
list, of course, is "The Brood," long prayed for by fans of
Cronenberg and '70s terror. But another exciting issue is
"Vampire Lovers" and "Countess Dracula" on a double feature
disc. "Countess" is one of the best Hammer films ever, and
"Vampire Lovers" the sexiest. Neither title has ever been on DVD in the U.S.,
and "Countess Dracula" wasn't even released to VHS here. "Countess" has
really only existed in the States as a VHS bootleg, although
it did make its way to laserdisc. The laserdisc was going for
$150 on Ebay before MGM announced the film would soon hit DVD.
Columbia is also issuing the now rare thriller "Mute
Witness" on Aug. 26 as well. Very cool.
Media
Blasters Presents 'Versus' and 'Blood Feast 2' on July 29
March 24, 2003
-- Media Blasters, the company that released outstanding remasters of
"Zombie 4" and "Zombi 3," is going to unleash the Japanese
zombie-action-martial-arts cult classic "Versus" on July 29. Also out
on that date will be H.G. Lewis' "Blood Feast 2." Media Blasters also
just released an uncut version of "Werewolf Woman," and is looking
like it may be the horror brand name to beat on DVD for 2003. ...
Meanwhile, Anchor Bay won't be releasing "Dawn of the Dead" to DVD
until 2004. The title was originally supposed to be back in stores in
a 3-disc set around the Fall of 2003.
'Burnt Offerings,' 'Incredible Melting Man' Coming to DVD
March 15, 2003
-- Two entertaining '70s fear films -- "Burnt
Offerings" starring Oliver Reed and Karen Black, and "The
Incredible Melting Man" featuring early effects work by Rick Baker
-- are on their way to DVD. "Offerings" is coming to disc courtesy of
MGM, around the same time they unleash "Countess Dracula! -- in
August. Meanwhile, "Incredible Melting Man" is coming sometime before
the end of the year, from Synapse.
'Countess
Dracula' to Hit DVD in the U.S.!
November 8, 2002
-- The greatest Ingrid Pitt movie ever made -- "Countess Dracula" --
will be coming to DVD in January-August of 2003, as a double feature
with that other sexifull Pitt classic, "The Vampire Lovers." The
double-feature Hammer set is coming from MGM, which is proving to be one of
the greatest horror DVD releasing companies around, second perhaps
only to Anchor Bay. This news just in from
DVDDrive-in.com.
More 1970s
Hammer on DVD
October
14, 2002 --
The same month that '70s Hammer
film "To the Devil a Daughter" reaches DVD in the U.S., in England
fans are being given a delictable box set of three of the sleaziest
and best of the Hammer 1970s catalog: "Countess Dracula," "Vampire
Circus" and "Twins of Evil." This dream box set is, sadly, not out in
the U.S., but hopefully its arrival in the UK will mean we'll see it
Stateside sometime in the near future.
Meanwhile, DVD-DriveIn is reporting
that Paramount plans to release "Frankenstein and the Monster From
Hell," -- a 1970s Frankenstein Hammer film starring Peter Cushing --
on DVD in the U.S. in 2003. Blue Underground has put together the
commentary and extras for the package.
DVD Updates
From Anchor Bay
September
20, 2002 --
Some big news from Anchor Bay on upcoming DVD releases. First up, the
company has found the original negative for George Romero's "Day of
the Dead." That means the film will be making it to DVD in 2003 and
will look better than it ever has before. (Thanks to DVDManiacs.net.)
Meanwhile, it looks like the company ran into a little trouble with
the release of its "Sleepaway Camp" box this year. The Red Cross has
complained about the inclusion of a very Red Cross-like logo on the
cover (see photo below, from the "A Major August for DVD Horror"
story). New editions of the cover won't feature the cross, as shown
above. (Thanks to HorrorDVDs.com).
A Major
August for DVD Horror
Updated
June
25, 2002 -- Every now and then, a DVD box set shows up that should
really impress horror fans. A couple years ago, the box that did it was
probably "The Nightmare on Elm Street" collection. Then we got
the "Omen" series. Now Anchor Bay is delivering a box set
devoted to the "Sleepaway Camp" franchise. Now, this was a
pretty bad franchise. But Anchor Bay happens to be putting together one
hell of an impressive package -- a "survival kit" -- which you
can get a great view of by clicking on the picture. (Thanks to DVDFile.) It's
just one of many an essential release coming out this August, including "The AntiChrist," "Zoltan: Hound of Dracula"
and "Nightmare City" (aka "City
of the Walking Dead"). All three are coming out from Anchor
Bay, and, like the Sleepaway Camp movies, are coming out August 20. Also
on
August 20, New Line will release "Blade 2"
in a special edition DVD set, featuring two discs, director
commentary, deleted scenes and more.
DVD-Drive In
has uncovered major news about a slew of essential horror DVDs coming
out from MGM and Columbia this August. First, the Columbia news:Hammer's
"Revenge of Frankenstein"
and the classic now-rarely seen satanic horror gem "The
Brotherhood of Satan" are coming out from Columbia on DVD this
August 13, along with classics like "Curse of the Demon," another
horror essential. Meanwhile,
the Drive-In has also uncovered cover art for a slew of MGM titles
heading out this Fall. Click here
to check 'em all out. MGM announced that "Return of the Living Dead" and "Last House on the Left" will be released to DVD Aug. 27, along with other much in-demand horror films, including "Scream and Scream Again," "Deranged," Masque of the Red Death" and "The Fog." No word on whether "Scream Again" will feature the original musical score, or the redone one that was on earlier video releases of the film.
Retailing for $14.99 as part of its Midnite Movies series will be double
features of "The Oblong Box" and "Scream and Scream Again";
"Deranged" and "Motel Hell"; "What's the Matter with Helen?",
and "Who Slew Auntie Roo?"; "The Attic" and "Crawlspace,"; "Masque of the Read Death" and "Premature Burial."
Three must-own special editions will also be released for $19.98 apiece: John Carpenter's "The Fog," Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" and Dan O'Bannon's "Return of the Living Dead." All will feature documentaries and (with the exception of ROTLD) director commentaries.
(Thanks to DVDDrive-In).
Meanwhile,
GoreZone.net is reporting that Dan O'Bannon says the version of his cult film, "Return
of the Living Dead," set to be released on DVD this year by MGM
is A-OK. Fans had angrily emailed MGM earlier over reports that they
were releasing a bad print to save time. If sales of the DVD are good, a
director's cut may be released in the future, with a never-before-seen
opening and ending.
Paramount
has also announced that the last two "Friday" films it
released ("Friday the 13th Part VII:
The New Blood" and "Friday
the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan") will be out in
the first week of September, along with "My Bloody
Valentine" and "April Fool's
Day." (You may just want to skip buying the last two.) New
Line, meanwhile, will be releasing "Jason
Goes to Hell" (minus the "Final Friday" monicker) and
"Jason X" the first week of Ocotber.
