'Turistas' Box Office: Sign of Trouble?
December 6, 2006 --
Fox Atomic's "Turistas" had a bad weekend at the box office, prompting rival filmmaker Eli Roth to call it an "atomic bomb" in his blog.
As put by Box Office Mojo: "The weekend's other new wide releases, Turistas and National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj, were negligible. Turistas had a premise like Hostel and many other recent horror movies but a fraction of the audience, attracting a mere $3.6 million at 1,570 locations. Distributor 20th Century Fox acquired Turistas for $4 million and positioned it as the first picture from its new youth label, Fox Atomic."Meanwhile, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" has generated a little less than $40 million at the box office, which sounds good, but it's really not so good compared to the $80 million of the 2003 relaunch of the franchise. These numbers don't look good for this type of "travelers get nailed by poor people" subgenre of horror.

Giant 'Turistas'
Images
Sept. 18, 2006 --
Chick flick director John Stockwell's new horror film "Turistas" sounds
pretty good. It's about a group of young backpackers' vacation turns
sour when a bus accident leaves them marooned in a remote Brazilian
jungle that holds an ominous secret. ESplatter.com just scored a slew of
unseen images from this tourists-in-trouble terror film. Stockwell is
best known for chick flicks like "Blue Crush" and "Crazy Beautiful."
We'll see how he handles horror. Here are some giant-sized JPGs from the
pic, which is hitting screens Dec. 1, stars Melissa George, and is
thankfully Rated R:
